DR. DODIDDILY AND THE DEE DOT'S

WELCOME YOU TO THE WORLD AROUND US.

 THE DRAGON LORDS CASTLE

  POLAND

International Conference Call Poland Map

Map: Poland

So many countries  surround Poland, and all the different names that you hear of all the time but are never quite sure where they are. Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, even Germany all have borders with this huge Country, I think I shall leave you a few small video's or maybe some songs to sing a long too whilst I begin my search for fantastic facts about your land.

What wonderful music, my middle son John has a Polish partner Weisha. They live over here in Wales and they have Katya her daughter staying with them and her boyfriend, they also have a little Jack Russell who must be about 5 months old now. I will try and find a photo of her after my dinner. xxx

Just look at this Standard.

Image from Chrystian KretowiczBar Confederacy Standard 1766-1772

An union of the Polish nobility in the defense of the faith and the independence of the country. It was organized against the king, Slanislus Augustus Poniatowski, and the Russians, who were supporting him. It was the first National Uprising against the foreign meddling in the affairs of the country.

One of the leading military commanders of the Confederacy was Count Kazimierz (Casimir) Pulaski, who eventually became the National Hero of Poland and the United States. In America, he is hailed as the "Father of the American Cavalry." He died, mortally wounded in the Battle of Savannah, while leading the cavalry charge against the British.

During the Confederacy, Pulaski was joined by his good friend, a Hungarian-Slovak aristocrat, Count Maurycy Beniowski (he considered himself Polish after that). He was an ultimate adventurer: captured by the Russians, exiled to the Far East, he managed to escape hijacking a Russian ship and the daughter of the Russian commander. His journeys took him almost around the world, Hawaii, Macau, the United States, France and Madagascar. He established a close friendship with Benjamin Franklin, whom he was trying to persuade to take Madagascar as an American colony, and was in America again to be at his friend's bedside (Pulaski's) just before he died. Finally, he returned one more time to Madagascar where he became an Emperor by popular acclaim.

Being one of the clostest tied to the United States and Nato

Being one of the most pro-American countries in the world (if not THE most), it isn't surprising that the main objective of the Polish foreign and defensive policy is the close alliance with the United States. Poles remember well who was its friend in the times of trouble. From Washington, Franklin and Jefferson, followed by Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover, to the great assistance on the road to freedom provided by Ronald Reagan, the United States proved to be Poland's best friend.
Bill Clinton played the instrumental role in bringing Poland into NATO and under presidents George H.W.Bush and George W.Bush the very close military collaboration was developed. F-16 are flying in the Polish sky and soon the Patriot batteries will protect the Polish land. Presence of American forces on Polish soil will give the country even better sense of security.

Gosh what an awful lot of Historical facts and they all came from.

KRAKOW

Photo: Café patrons and a church

Café patrons enjoy a view of St. Mary’s Church across Kraków’s picturesque Rynek Główny, one of the largest public plazas in Europe.   Dating to the 13th century and home to examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the Old Town’s market square is a popular shopping and dining destination for locals and tourists.

The Legend of Smok Wawelski

Many, many years ago, when Krakow was still the capital of Poland, there lived in the castle on the Wawel mountain King Krak with his daughter Wanda. All the citizens in Krakow loved their kind-hearted King and the loving Wanda. For many years everyone lived peacefully and provided for the well- being of their town. Amongst them lived one of the cobbler's family, a capable and hard-working apprentice by the name of Dratewka.

One day the in a cave in the Wawel mountains, an evil dragon had settled. He had three heads and his body was covered in scales. When he was angry he went into such a rage that the mountains shook and he breathed fire and smoke from his mouth. He made the whole town afraid. In order to calm him down the people put a sheep in front of his cave everyday. But this was not enough for him. Once a year even a small girl had to be sacrificed.

Many of the citizens tried to fight against the dragon. However, no-one was able to beat him. The council of elders spent days and nights trying to find a solution but they couldn't find one. At long last there were no more girls left in Krakow, only Princess Wanda. The dragon became more and more impatient. Since there were no other girls to be found everyone knew that it was the king's daughter's turn.

There was great mourning all over Krakow. The king announced to the whole country that he was looking for a brave knight who could defeat the dragon. Many courageous knights came and fought without success against the beast. Most were killed in their fight. When all hope had been abandoned, the cobbler's apprentice, Dratewka, appeared before the King. He asked for permission to fight the dragon. The king listened and agreed to what he was intending to do. The young man got to work on his plan straight away.

From the butcher he got himself a sheepskin. From all the citizens he collected brimstone, salt, pepper and pitch. He filled the sheepskin with these and sewed it up tightly so it looked like a real sheep. At night he put the "sheep" in front of the entrance to the cave. The next morning the hungry dragon came out of the cave and ate up the sheep straight away. Shortly afterwards he felt a terrible burning all over his body. He tried to stop the burning by drinking massive amounts of water. He drank so much that the bed of the river Wisla could be seen. He carried on drinking until eventually he exploded with an enormous bang. There was great joy throughout Krakow. Dratewka married Wanda and they lived happily together for a very long time to come.
