EIRE - The Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland occupies most of the island of Ireland, off the coast of England and Wales. Its eastern capital, Dublin, is the birthplace of writers including Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett, and home of Guinness beer. Nicknamed the "Emerald Isle” for its lush landscape of rolling green hills, it’s dotted with castles and ancient sites, such as massive 12th-century Cahir Castle.

Wow what a beautiful Castle kids and I wonder how many of you have been to visit it. You are so lucky to have castles in your country, so many kids only get to build them on the sands when they on holiday. Dr. DoDiddily and the Dee Dot's have quite a lot of Castles in their country of Wales as well. My favourite one in Wales is called Denbigh Castle and is around the same age as Cahir Castle as well. In fact our two countries are very the same and I do believe when the world was really very, very new many thousands of years ago that they were joined together.

SURE

(Children wearing emerald scarves or ribbons and shamrocks with ordinary dress green)

So fond you are of shamrocks,

So very fond of green,

Why did you coe, St. Patrick's Day?

Until March snowbanks go away

Your colour can't be seen!

(St. Patrick's Day, wearing all green with shamrocks)

O darlin' little children,

With eyes so bright and keen,

What do I care what March may do?

The world I love best shows my hue,

While you and all the likes of you

Are wearin' of the green!

As with many of the countries I have travelled around I come to one which is close by my home country of Wales. But whereas we have three main-land parts to Great Britain; England, Scotland and Wales, we also have A small part of Northern Ireland which is called ULSTER.

ULSTER - Northern Ireland

Ulster

Unfortunately I as yet have never had the pleasure of visiting either the North or South buT hope to change this in the summer when I have planned trips to Cork and Londonderry when two of my best friends live.

One of my biggest passions however is for the game of Rugby which is at this very moment is in the middle of the six nations cup. Of course my Wales is on top today but who knows who will be top next week.???

Another great passion of mine is Irish Music which is fantastic on both sides of the border and of course the Blarny of the Irish Story Tellers that grace our books both old and new.  It is a wonderous thing the way sport and music both play a huge part in the uniting of nations.

great map of Ireland

I like this map of Ireland cos it has a few places we can go to visit straight away.

Would you like to come along with me and my friends.

So why not join in the journey below and by the time you've finished I guess we'll all know about the wonderful Emerald Isles from north to south and east to west.

snakes and toadsST. PATRICK WAS A GENTLEMAN

Oh, St. Patrick was a gentleman who came of decent people;

He built a church in Dublin town, and on it put a steeple.

His father was a Gallagher, his mother was a Brady,

His aunt was an O'Shaughnessy, His uncle an O'Grady.

Chorus: Ho ho ho

So success attend St. Patrick's fist, for he's a Saint so clever,

Oh, he gave the snakes and toads a twist, and bothered them for ever.

The Wicklow hills are very high, and so's the Hill of Houth, sir;

But there's a hill much bigger still, much higher nor them both, sir.

'Twas on the top of this high hill St. Patrick preached his sarmint,

That drove the frogs into the bogs, and banished all the varmint.

Chorus: repeat

CobraThere's not a mile in Ireland's isle where dirty varmint musters,

But there he put his dear fore-foot and murdered them in clusters,

The toads went pop, the frogs went hop, slap-dash into the water,

And the snakes committed suicide to save themselves from slaughter.

Chorus: repeat

Nine hundred thousand reptiles blue he charmed with sweet discourses,Froggy

And dined on them at Killaloe in soups and second courses.

Where blind-worms crawling in the grass disgusted all the nation,

He gave them a rise that opened their eyes to a sense of their situation.

another frog but no toads yet xxx

Chorus:

So success attend St. Patrick's fist, for he's a Saint so clever,

Oh, he gave the snakes and toads a twist, and bothered them for ever.

AND JUST INCASE YOU FIND IT TO DIFFICULT TO CATCH A LEPRECHAUN WHY NOT SIT DOWN WITH A FAMILY MEMBER AND MAKE THIS ONE.

We couldn never hand our cloths down to each other, we were all very different sizes, and anyone coming after me wouldn't have been able to wear anything I was such a tom-boy and thing were worn out long before Kath could have them.

This is a very old picture of the four of us taken in Coed Poeth in North Wales, way back in 1952/3.
